HOME LIGHTING GUIDE

Great lighting does more than illuminate a room — it sets the mood, highlights architecture, and pulls a whole design together. At Sparkle Light, our home lighting collection covers every fixture type your home needs, from statement chandeliers to the smallest bedside lamp. Whether you're building new, renovating, or simply refreshing a room, our Markham showroom and online store make it easy to find fixtures that match your home, your style, and your budget.

Home Lighting by Category

Ceiling Lights

Chandeliers, pendants, flush mounts, semi-flush mounts, and track lights — the fixtures that anchor a room from above. Ideal for dining rooms, kitchens, entryways, and any space that needs a focal point or even ambient light.
Ceiling fixtures set the primary light level and style tone of a room. Chandeliers create a dramatic centerpiece over dining tables and in entryways with high ceilings. Pendant lights hang lower and work beautifully over kitchen islands, dining tables, and entryways. Flush mounts sit tight against the ceiling, making them the best choice for low ceilings, hallways, and bedrooms, while semi-flush mounts offer a bit more presence without hanging too low. Track lights are the most flexible option, letting you direct light exactly where it's needed — great for kitchens, galleries, and open-concept living spaces.

Wall Lights

Wall sconces, vanity lights, bath bars, and picture lights add layered, flattering light exactly where you need it — hallways, bathrooms, and above artwork or mirrors.
Wall lighting adds layers and warmth that ceiling fixtures alone can't achieve. Wall sconces flank hallways, staircases, and living room walls with soft, ambient light. Vanity lights and bath bars are sized and positioned specifically for even, flattering illumination around bathroom mirrors — no harsh shadows. Picture lights direct focused light onto artwork or architectural details, adding a gallery-like finishing touch to any room.

Lamps

Floor lamps, table lamps, and desk lamps bring portable, flexible light to living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices — perfect for reading, working, or simply softening a space.
Lamps are the most versatile fixture in your home because they're portable and don't require electrical work to place. Floor lamps fill corners and add height and warmth to living rooms and reading nooks. Table lamps are essential for bedside lighting, living room end tables, and entryway consoles. Desk lamps provide focused task lighting for home offices and study spaces, and are available in adjustable and dimmable styles for all-day use.

Outdoor Lighting

Durable, weather-rated fixtures for porches, patios, and landscaping — combining curb appeal with safety and security after dark.
Outdoor fixtures need to look good and hold up to Canadian weather. Outdoor ceiling lights cover porches and covered patios. Outdoor wall lights flank front doors and garages, providing both security and curb appeal. Post lights mark driveways and walkways, while outdoor hanging lights and landscape lights add dimension to larger outdoor living areas and gardens.

Choosing the Right Home Lighting

  • Room Purpose: Kitchens and home offices need brighter task lighting; bedrooms and living rooms benefit from softer, warmer tones.
  • Ceiling Height: Flush mounts and recessed lights suit low ceilings; chandeliers and multi-tier pendants need higher ceilings to breathe.
  • Layered Lighting: Combine ceiling fixtures, wall lights, and lamps for ambient, task, and accent light in the same room.
  • Style & Finish: Keep finishes (brass, matte black, brushed nickel, chrome) consistent across a room or an open floor plan for a cohesive look.
  • Color Temperature: Warm white (2700K–3000K) feels cozy and relaxing; cool white (4000K–5000K) suits kitchens and workspaces.
  • Dimmers: Adding dimmer switches to ceiling and wall fixtures gives you control over mood and function in the same space.

Home Lighting FAQ

What's the difference between ceiling lights, wall lights, and lamps?

Ceiling lights (chandeliers, pendants, flush mounts) provide the main ambient light in a room. Wall lights (sconces, vanity lights, bath bars) add layered or task-specific light at eye level. Lamps (floor, table, desk) are portable fixtures that add flexible, warm light wherever you need it without any wiring.

How many light fixtures does a room typically need?

Most rooms look and function best with layered lighting: one main ceiling fixture, one or two wall lights or lamps for ambient fill, and a task light where needed (like a desk or reading lamp). Larger or multi-purpose rooms may need more.

What lighting works best for low ceilings?

Flush mounts, semi-flush mounts, and recessed lighting sit close to the ceiling and are the best options for rooms with 8-foot ceilings or lower.

Are LED fixtures worth it for home lighting?

Yes. LED fixtures use significantly less energy, last far longer than incandescent or halogen bulbs, and are available in a wide range of color temperatures to suit any room.

Can I mix metal finishes across a home?

You can, as long as it's intentional. Many designers pair two complementary finishes (such as matte black and brushed brass) throughout a home for visual interest, while keeping one consistent finish per room.

Is outdoor lighting different from indoor lighting?

Yes. Outdoor fixtures are rated for exposure to moisture and temperature swings, so they must be labeled for outdoor or wet/damp location use. Indoor fixtures are not built to withstand the elements.

Do you offer lighting design help for a full home?

Yes. Our team offers whole-home lighting packages for new builds and renovations, helping you select coordinated fixtures for every room based on your style and budget.
